I did the thing I said I wouldn't. I have staunch

I did the thing I said I wouldn't.
I have staunchly stood by not colour correcting white pressed flowers. All of my whites bar two very early pieces have been natural up until now.
Why?
It's a lot more work. And I could TELL.
I don't like my pressed flower artwork looking like it's enhanced. That's just the way I prefer it. I create art that I would be happy to hang on my own wall.
So why did I do it?
White roses don't always press white, and this beautiful bridal bouquet was JUST white roses. With a white frame. It was, in my opinion, painful how non white those roses pressed when set against the white frame.
So I did some research and trails, and then I put it to the client to decide what she would like. She chose the colour enhancing. And I'm glad.
I love that you can still see the petals veins. That it's not a bright white. And many other things.
Will I do this every time moving forward? To be decided. I still like the natural look so I guess we'll see. Every piece of art is unique, and every piece of art is the opportunity for a collaboration with the client if they so choose.
Let's see where this journey takes us.

A LOT of travelling was done to create this artwor

A LOT of travelling was done to create this artwork.
Our lovely bride had a vision which she sourced her own frames for. She got them delivered to her and then brought them all the way from America to NZ.
She had her wedding in Queenstown.
Then she flew her flowers and her frames up to me in Auckland, had her honeymoon and went home while I pressed her wedding flowers.
From there we designed her artwork together so there were gaps for her to add her photos later. I cut out the size the photos would be to make sure they would fit.
Then I got my excellent courier partners to package and send them safely back.
This is the power of collaboration. Outcomes are always more robust and nuanced when all the parts come together.

Why this is one of my all time favourite pressed wedding flower artworks to date 🔽
1. The colours are so vibrant
2. The dahlia reconstruction is super satisfying

Recently I won a competition! In that competition

Recently I won a competition!
In that competition I was able to spend a certain amount at NZ stores within the Parnell area. If you know anything about Parnell its that it's EXPENSIVE.
But, we found this chair which we both fell in live with. Note BOTH. Which if you're in a partnership you'll know can sometimes be a challenge.
Anyway, we found the chair and after much deliberation chose the fabric. From there it was hand made in NZ - which I love.
Now we're enjoying the chair. But maybe not as much as my cat is 🤣
And what better way to keep enjoying the chair than to display this latest pressed wedding bouquet framed as art. I'm loving the subtle green popping through on the Hydrangea mixed with the pink Roses and Lisianthus.

What do you do when you just found out about flower preservation the day of your wedding?! 😫
This happened to this lovely couple, and unfortunately all the preservation artists were booked up.
If this ever happens to you, hit me up because this is my illustrious 'Plan B'.
It isn't preservation, but I provide detailed instructions on how to hang dry your bouquet for best results.
The brides sister did an immaculate job on these flowers, and we then popped them into a box frame. Please note that my glass back upgrade only available for pressed flowers.
There are some artists who press air dried flowers, but I am not one of them. I have tried it in the past and I did not like the look.

I like reconstruction when pressing wedding flower

I like reconstruction when pressing wedding flowers because it gives me control and artistic license.
This is important - especially if you have a bouquet that consists of mostly one type of flower such as roses.
I like being able to show both open, closed and side-on angles for roses. It feels more like a bouquet or the garden to me that way. Roses in bud, half bloom and full bloom.
This add visual interest, depth and texture, which is how you experience a bouquet when fresh. It also provides visual interest for the artwork.

Yes he actually is this annoyed.
I am constantly hearing:
"What's this?!?!" *points at flowers in the lounge*
"Your flowers are creeping into the rest of the house again..."
"You need to sort out those flowers"
"When are you moving your flowers into the garage?"
And my least favourite:
"There's no point in getting you flowers as the house is always full of them".
Like come ON!!!! I preserve the flowers clients bring. I want some to enjoy for longer than an afternoon 😭

HELP!
Tell me your favourite flower and I will include it in my winter art project.
I could just decide on my own, but that's no fun. I want this to be a joint project between you and me.

I regretted it so much!
These beautiful flowers were assembled with care and love.
But there was one thing that was off about them that embarrassed me so much.
Can you spot it?
It's slightly off centre 😞
I apologised and did all the right things, and when it was picked up they said 'we wouldn't have even noticed if you hadn't pointed it out'.
Sometimes I still think about this.
How many things have we done that we feel terrible about that no one else will notice??
I think sometimes we're a bit hard on ourselves. Of course we need to own our shortfalls. But this is your reminder to be a bit kinder to yourself.

Me from 2 years ago would never have been okay with this.
Showing up and TALKING on camera?
Showing up with everyday hair, no filter and a tired face?
So in other words - showing up REAL and RAW.
So what has changed?
I think I'm at a point where I'm more comfortable with me. I want to thank social media for that level of comfort. And I might not be everyone's jam, but that's okay. Why would we want to be anything other than ourselves to keep people around? That sounds exhausting if I'm honest.
These days, my energy is a valuable asset and I'm only giving so much of it away. If you're in this camp - hi, my name is Lisa and you've found a fellow compatriot of the land of 'not enough time/space/energy'.
I've been really good at giving away too much of myself, and worrying what others think. I'm in no way perfect, and I'm slowly working on this.
Today's step was putting up a video of me explaining what's in my art with words rather than just text. It's a simple piece of artwork, but I really love that about it.

When we're spending time with special people, these are the things we're building together.
The moments.
The places we can visit when times get difficult, or when those people are out of reach.
So we can cling to them.
Treasure them.
These gorgeous bright flowers make me think of this. Of the beautiful moments that were created on this very special day.
Of the amazing people that got to celebrate together.
Of those bright shining moments that will be a life-raft for some, and looked back on fondly over the years.

Is it a glass back?
Is it clean lines and white on white? Black tie? Boho?
Is it a deconstructed bouquet? A Meadow? A Triptych?
The answer is yes to everything and more. The real answer is this: it's an arrangement that sparks joy in you - that you made collaboratively with your artist.
There actually is no right answer.

Reconstruct the chaos
When I press flowers, one of my favoured techniques is reconstruction. This is where I press each petal individually and then glue them back together again to make a flower.
I like this method because it helps retain colour better, and it gives me more control on the final outcome.
It's time-consuming, and you really need to be a patient person if you want to work this way.
I've been having a hard time this year personally. I've been reflecting, and I think life is a bit like flower preservation.
When things fall apart, they can be rebuilt.
It doesn't look the same, but it's still amazing and beautiful.
Don't despair when you look around and only see fragments. Scoop these up carefully. Preserve them. Be patient. Make something new when enough time has passed that the glue can stick.

Something always goes wrong.
A colleague and I were talking about weddings last night and how they're never perfect.
The example he gave me (this is rather extreme) was that the father of the bride fell down a ditch the night before the wedding walking home after some pre-event celebrations. No one found him for a couple of hours, and when they did, he had a broken hip among other very serious injuries.
He was DETERMINED to walk his girl down the aisle. He checked himself out with pain killers and still somehow walked her down the aisle. Then promptly off for a hip replacement!!!!
For my wedding, which is probably more the norm, only a few minor things didn't go as planned. The music didn't work at first, the flowers weren't quite what I'd ordered for the bridesmaids, some minor family drama, and a few other things like that.
But those things didn'tmatter to me. The main thing to me was the people coming together and having a good time.
If you're planning a special day and want things to go as you planned, please change your mindset. It will only set you up for stress!
Instead, just try to remember you're not there for anyone but you and that special person, and celebrating that union can be as simple as enjoying a sunset together. Anything more extravagant is a blessing.
